You may not be aware of the many side trips that are available off the Strip if you're new in Vegas. Las Vegas is synonymous with gambling and glitz. However there are many other things to do in Sin City. We spoke last week about some of those hidden gems outside of the Strip.

Jeff German

German has expanded his podcasting efforts over the last few year. German wrote "Mobbed Up" a series on the fight against organized criminality, which was produced jointly by the Review-Journal (and Mob Museum). It covered the dark characters who populated the Las Vegas Valley during the 1970s and 1980s.

His reporting revealed three decades of organized crime and political corruption in Las Vegas. Most notably, he broke the story of the mass shooting that left more than 60 people dead and hundreds more injured in 2017. He also wrote a true-crime novel about a mob connection in this area. He also broke the story in 1998 of Ted Binion’s murder. He also collaborated with a CNN analyst in the Binion case.

Velveteen Rabbit

The Velveteen Rabbit, originally from Philadelphia is a colorful and magical mix of stage magic, music, and mime. Nana, the puppet's nurse, stands at 10 feet tall. The shadows of the other adult characters are all that can be seen. The show runs Monday through Sat from 7 p.m. - 1 a.m.

The musical adaptation of "The Velveteen Rabbit", a 1922 children's book, is a two-act piece featuring choreography by K. T. Nelson as well as a stellar cast. The 25 year-old company's signature style combines elements of traditional European and Asian dance. If you are in the area, this production is a must-see.

Encore Boston Harbor

The Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Massachusetts, is close to the Logan International Airport and many colleges and universities. It towers above the Mystic River, and can be seen from all major roads. It is a good spot to spend a weekend in Boston.

The 600 guest rooms at Encore Boston Harbor are neutrally decorated and have light, airy finishes. Some rooms have views of Boston Harbor and the skyline. The room type determines the price, which can range from $339 to $1099 per night.
